癡迷脫口秀笑話表演的魯帕（勞勃狄尼洛 飾）夢想自己也能站在舞台上享受觀眾的歡呼，借瘋狂粉絲瑪莎創造的機會，魯帕得以和脫口秀明星傑瑞交談，魯帕躊躇滿志的自我介紹，雖然傑瑞敷衍了事，但魯帕仍視自己為傑瑞的好友。為了能在心愛的麗塔面前出人頭地，魯帕不惜一些代價要獲得與傑瑞同台表演的機會，另一方面傑瑞被魯帕的糾纏搞到忍無可忍，將魯帕與並不知情的麗塔趕出家門。傑瑞的行為激怒了魯帕，他與瑪莎合作綁架傑瑞，威脅電視台播放自己的表演，魯帕終於如願以償，掀起一場軒然大波…… 本片獲1984年英國電影學院獎最佳劇...
