一贫如洗的流浪汉查理终日忍受着饥饿的困扰，他试图找一份工作，却比登天还难——失业的人太多了。这一天，当他再一次从招工的队伍中悻悻而归时，却偶遇了一只受伤的小狗斯凯普。心地善良的流浪汉从此与斯凯普相依为命，“合伙”偷来午餐车里的香肠解决了肚子问题。他们又来到一个舞厅，邂逅了歌女埃德娜，却因付不起钱而被人扔出了场子。当查理垂头丧气地回到破烂不堪的小屋时，斯凯普突然发现了什么——它拼命刨坑，竟挖出了一个装满钱的钱夹，于是一切都改变了……...
